Qin Lineages and the Zhonglü Yun Repertoire in the Lingnan School's Wuxue Shanfang Qinpu Part I

Abstract

The guqin has long served as a cultural symbol in Chinese intellectual life. Wuxue Shanfang Qinpu preserves repertoire transmitted from the Central Plains since the Song and Yuan dynasties, the intellectual legacy of Chen Baisha, and traces of Lingnan teaching lineages. This study examines its surviving editions and manuscripts, the organization of its Zhonglü yun repertoire, and the sources through which that repertoire developed. It distinguishes manuscript completion, prefatory writing, and block printing, and traces two textual branches through the Daoguang first edition and the Guangxu reprint. The collection extends an inherited classification of five yun into seven while differentiating pitch frameworks, modes, and modal finals. Its Zhonglü yun repertoire combines local Gugang transmission, established Jiangnan publications, and private instruction. These findings explain how Huang Jingxing consolidated diverse musical inheritances into a collection that supported the emergence of a distinctive Lingnan school and sustained exchange with other regional qin traditions.

Keywords: Huang Jingxing, surviving editions of Wuxue Shanfang Qinpu, Zhonglü yun, seven-yun classification, repertoire organization
